Celebrating its Four Year Anniversary, Community Lawyers, Inc. Launches Its Community Workshop Series
Community empowerment continues at CLI, they recently added new workshops - Small Business, Sealing of Juvenile Records, Tenant Rights, Loan Modification and Family Law Clinics.
COMPTON, CA – Immediately after its grand opening of the Community Lawyers Access Center on January 30th, 2009, Community Lawyers, Inc., a non-profit organization co-founded by Harvard Law graduate Luz E. Herrera and UCLA Law graduate R. Vanessa Alvarado in May 2005, established legal clinics on Tuesday evenings that provided guidance to low-income individuals seeking to settle a civil matter. Since then, grand efforts have been made to establish additional programs for underserved communities. The CLI board of directors, with the help of other volunteers, has spearheaded the initiative to launch a new workshop series for the communities of Southeast Los Angeles.
The first workshop to set in motion the series will be the “Sealing of Juvenile Records” on Saturday, April 18th presented by Deputy Public Defender Humberto Benitez. Throughout the months of April and May CLI will also introduce a set of six Small Business Workshops that will discuss relevant topics such as Contracts & Real Estate, Workers Compensation and Navigating Municipal Regulations. It is a six-week program that will meet on Thursday evenings to make it possible for local business owners to attend as well as individuals who are seeking information about starting their own business. Additional topics that will be presented in the upcoming months are “Tenant Rights Workshop”, “Family Law Self-Help Clinics” and “Loan Modification Workshop”.
CLI aims to increase legal service delivery in underserved areas by mentoring and training lawyers and paralegals to serve low- and moderate- income clients and their communities. Along with its newly launched workshops, CLI promotes its mission at local events and public fundraisers. On April 25th, Community Lawyers, Inc. will participate in the MABA Community Fair at Plaza Mexico in Lynwood and host on May 2nd the Celebrating Access to Justice Art Fundraiser at Casita del Pueblo in Whittier.
